Silicone Engineering racer tops Superbike and Supersport sessions ahead of Hickman and Cummins

Bradford racer Dean Harrison led the way in both Superbike and Supersport practice at the MCE Ulster Grand Prix today, as the action got underway at a dry Dundrod.

The 29 year-old clocked a 132.451mph lap in the day’s final session, which combined the Superbike and Superstock classes, putting him ahead of the 131mph laps from Peter Hickman and Conor Cummins. The time came on the last of his 14 laps, in what was an impressive stint on the Kawasaki ZX-10R Superbike.

Rising star Davey Todd came close to breaking the 130mph barrier on the Cookstown BE Racing Suzuki in fourth, followed by Davo Johnson, steady away on his Tyco BMW debut.

The session was disrupted following a red flag, brought out after an incident at Lougher’s. Organisers later confirmed that Derek McGee and Seamus Elliott were being treated for suspected broken bones, but there was little change to the placings after the restart.

In the Superstock class it was roles reversed as Hickman came out on top, 2.5 seconds ahead of Harrison, Derek McGee, Todd and Cummins.

The Supersport session meanwhile was hotly contested, with Harrison’s 125.438mph lap putting him just 0.398 ahead of Cummins, who was in turn 0.629 in front of Hickman on the Trooper Triumph by Smiths Racing. As expected, the three have been the early pace setters.

The top five in the Supertwins session was McGee, Adam McLean, Daniel Cooper, Christian Elkin and Dominic Herbertson, but with McGee set to miss the remainder of the meeting it’s looking likely there will be two close races on Thursday and Saturday. McLean is looking for his first international road race win, while Cooper will be hoping to go one better than last year, when he was pipped at the post by Ivan Lintin.

Ian Lougher, making his return to Dundrod this year onboard his own ILR Paton, finished ninth, but things didn’t quite go as smoothly as planned for the 18-time winner:

“It’s been really good to get back out there but we had a little bit of a problem as the clutch was slipping, so we just had to persevere and then pull in a little early. I think I got about five laps in in the end and there’s only this one practice session, so I’ll just give it my best and make sure we enjoy it. This is definitely one of my favourite circuits though, or probably the favourite. I have to say it’s like I’ve never been away.”

Roads close at 10am on Thursday, with practice sessions followed by the first races for the MCE Ulster Grand Prix.

Manx rider takes Supersport victory as McLean claims maiden international win in the Supertwins

Conor Cummins took his first victory since 2009 at the MCE Ulster Grand Prix today as the first races got underway in damp conditions at Dundrod.

The Padgett’s Honda rider led from the first lap to win the Lisburn & Castlereagh Supersport race from McAdoo Kawasaki’s Adam McLean and Silicone Engineering’s Dean Harrison.

Speaking in parc ferme after the race, Cummins commented:

“The bike was faultless. We made a tyre choice right from the off and stuck with it, and I think experience counted for a lot there. The Padgett’s team and myself have been round here a lot so I’m well happy. The bike was perfect.”

“It’s nice to be back on the top step here after all these years. It wasn’t an easy race as the first two or three laps were pretty ding dong but I just got my head down and got into a rhythm, keeping it as smooth as possible.”

The race followed an earlier outing for the Supertwin class, after Clerk of the Course Noel Johnston made an adjustment to the schedule following some heavy downpours around Dundrod.

That DGH Recovery Services Supertwin race was one to remember for Magherafelt’s Adam McLean, who claimed his maiden international roads win after a close battle with Christian Elkin. Third place went to Ian Lougher, making his first return to the MCE Ulster Grand Prix since 2013, and the 55 year-old recorded what’s thought to be his 51st podium at Dundrod.

Speaking after the race, McLean immediately dedicated that to his fallen teammate James Cowton, who sadly lost his life earlier this year at the Southern 100.

“It’s nice. First international road race win sounds good but I’d like to dedicate that to James. Conditions were tricky out there but hopefully we can get out in the next couple of races and get as good a start as that again.”

In the final session of the day, the Belfast International Airport Ultra-lightweight / Lightweight race, Christian Elkin built on his earlier podium with another dominant win in the Ultra-lightweight class, finishing ahead of an emotional Michal Dokoupil on the Ariane Moto3 machine and Nigel Moore on his Moto3 Honda.

The Belfast International Airport Lightweight race meanwhile, was won by Neil Kernohan, who came home eight seconds ahead of Shaun Anderson on the CB Racing Honda and Darryl Tweed on his M&D Racing Honda.

In the earlier practice sessions, it was Dean Harrison who claimed Supersport pole position and Cummins set the first 134mph lap of the year to take Superbike pole.

Roads close at 9.30am on Saturday with a full schedule of racing planned.

Adam McLean clinched his maiden international road racing victory in Thursday’s Supertwins race at the MCE Ulster Grand Prix.

The Tobermore rider dedicated his win to the memory of his McAdoo Racing team-mate, James Cowton, who was killed in a crash at the Southern 100 in July.

The race was brought forward on the schedule after the Supersport event had been red flagged due to heavy rain showers at Dundrod.

In mixed conditions, McLean shot into the lead from pole on Roy Hanna’s Kawasaki and was chased by Christian Elkin.

The front two quickly broke clear of the rest as a battle developed for third involving Ian Lougher on the ILR/Mark Coverdale Paton, Michael Sweeney (Kawasaki) and Davey Todd, who was riding the single cylinder Kramer 690.

McLean was unable to make a break from Elkin on the opening laps but he gradually opened a gap and continued to edge away in the middle part of the race, eventually easing into a lead of two seconds.

The 22-year-old kept his nerve in the tricky conditions to take a deserved win over Elkin, with Welsh veteran Lougher incredibly returning to the rostrum as he edged out Sweeney for third.

English rider Todd was a close fifth, while Joey Thompson was a long way back in sixth on the second ILR/Mark Coverdale Paton.

Dan Cooper decided to sit out the race due to the conditions, while Derek McGee was a non-starter on the KMR Kawasaki after being ruled out of the rest of the event following a crash on Wednesday, when he was caught up in an incident involving Seamus Elliott.

After final qualifying, a long delay of two hours 45 minutes ensued before racing commenced as heavy rain showers broke out around the course.

Paramedics are currently treating two unnamed riders before taking them to hospital, at this stage the extent of their injuries are unknown.

Seems as if racing will be delayed until around 13:00 hrs at least.

Peter Hickman claimed a double at the MCE Ulster Grand Prix with victory in the feature MMB Superbike race, which was declared a result after two laps. Hickman, who earlier won the Supersport race, took the win on his Smiths BMW after the race was red-flagged on lap three due to rain.

The race had been restarted after English rider Davey Todd crashed at the Deer’s Leap.

The 22-year-old was taken to hospital with ‘suspected fractures’.

Lincolnshire rider Hickman led over the line on the second lap and was credited with his second victory on a frustrating day at Dundrod, with Lee Johnston in second place on the Honda Racing Fireblade, 1.3 seconds behind.

David Johnson finished third on the Tyco BMW HP4 Race ahead of Paul Jordan (Dafabet Devitt Kawasaki), Brian McCormack (TAG BMW) and Sam West on his PRL BMW.

The race began in overcast conditions and light rain began to fall on the opening lap, which began to increase in intensity.

Manx rider Conor Cummins, who had moved into the lead on his Padgett’s Honda, slid off unhurt at the Lindsay Hairpin.

Dean Harrison was forced to pit after losing a foot-peg from his Silicone Engineering Kawasaki as a result of Cummins’ crash.

The Ulster Grand Prix was abandoned on Saturday as a result of bad weather.

Saturday’s MCE Ulster Grand Prix was abandoned due to deteriorating weather conditions at Dundrod.

Clerk of the Course Noel Johnston made the decision around 5.30pm with three races remaining, including the second Supersport and Superbike events and the Supertwin race.

Blustery winds, fading light and rain conspired against the organisers on a difficult day.

French rider Fabrice Miguet was left critically injured following a crash in the morning in the Superstock race. Later, young English rider Davey Todd suffered ‘suspected fractures’ after crashing in the Superbike race, forcing a red flag.

Peter Hickman was declared the winner of the restarted Superbike race from Lee Johnston by 1.3 seconds, which was halted on the third lap due to the weather.

The Ultra-Lightweight/Lightweight race was also red-flagged due to poor conditions.

Shaun Anderson was credited with the Lightweight win while Czech competitor Michal Dokoupil got the verdict in the Ultra-Lightweight race.

Smith’s BMW star claims second consecutive Man of the Meeting crown as rain cuts action short at Dundrod

Peter Hickman added another accolade to his stellar 2018 roads season as he claimed the Man of the Meeting crown at the MCE Ulster Grand Prix for the second year in a row.

The 31 year-old was declared the winner in a reduced distance MMB Surfacing Superbike race, which combined with his earlier win in the Centra Whitemountain Supersport race and second place in the earlier Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council Superstock race, was enough to see him take the title ahead of Manx man Conor Cummins.

The results meant he lifted the Darran Lindsay memorial trophy for the second year running, in a day that proved challenging for Clerk of the Course Noel Johnston amid constantly changing conditions.

In the first race of the day, the Lisburn & Castlereagh City Superstock race, it was Silicone Engineering Racing’s Dean Harrison that took top honours by just 0.203 seconds from Hickman, with Cummins continuing his strong form from Thursday in third and Davey Todd a close fourth after a shortened race due to a red flag.

And while Harrison was setting a new Superstock lap record at the front, further down the pack there were some standout performances from Paul Jordan, who took sixth in only his second race on the Dafabet Devitt Kawasaki, and another Manx racer Ryan Kneen in 11th.

Speaking in parc ferme, Harrison said:

“It was a great battle. It’s such close racing round here at the moment with the amount of slipstream involved, and I was expecting a battle as the bikes are very evenly matched. I just kept going and going, we got the lap record which proved we were on a really good pace. I just thought get behind Peter, sit on him and figure out where I could make a move.”

The Centra Whitemountain Supersport race followed, which Hickman duly dominated after Harrison retired early on, breaking clear of the chasing pack to take the chequered flag 7.935 seconds ahead of the Padgett’s duo of Lee Johnston and Cummins.

It was a tight battle behind Hickman’s Trooper by Smith’s Racing Triumph, not only between Johnston and Cummins, who finished just 0.041 apart, but between Jordan and Michael Sweeney for fifth and Joey Thompson and Dominic Herbertson for eighth.

Commenting on the race, Hickman said:

“The Triumph has been running really strong and I had a good run out of Joey’s Windmill so I thought if I can pass Dean, which I did do, and if I can pass Adam at the same time then I could put a gap into them all.

“We all know Dean’s really strong on the Supersport bike and I don’t know exactly what happened, but I knew I got a gap and the gap kept growing so I kept my head down and kept hitting my points and managed to pull away.

“The Supersport bike’s not really my strongest class and I’ve had three wins here so it sounds daft me saying that with two wins last year and one this year but the bike just works really well and it suits me down to the ground.”

Then in the day’s only Superbike outing, the MMB Resurfacing race, it was Hickman who was declared winner ahead of Lee Johnston and Davo Johnson, who claimed his maiden international road racing podium on the Tyco BMW HP4-R.

It was a challenging session as the action was cut short twice – initially after Davey Todd slipped off at the Deer’s Leap with the Cookstown BE Racing rider later confirmed to have suffered suspected fractures, and then again in the restart due to inclement weather.

Lastly, in what ended up being the final racing of the day, the Plant Lubrication (NI) Ultralightweight / Lightweight race, Shaun Anderson took the spoils in the Lightweight class, while Michal Dokupil went one better than his result on Thursday when he took his first ever international win in the Ultra-lightweights.
