The inspiring rise in popularity of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Road Races in recent years, is having an increased Global Reach.

In addition to racing fans travelling from the Americas, Oceania Continents and Europe. The ‘Friendly Races’ is now emboldening its presence in South Africa.

Each July road racing fans thoughts return to the Isle of Man for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Road Races, with many thousands making the journey to watch the races and soak up the atmosphere.

First run in 1955 riders and racing fans made their way to the Island, initially from the adjacent Isles, but it wasn’t long before competitors from Europe and further afield arrived, including from Australia and New Zealand along with the racing enthusiasts following ‘pure road racing’.

The continent of Africa in earlier years provided British and European racers with ‘Winter’ Racing, particularly South Africa and whilst the out of season evacuation has ceased racing wise, the following of motorcycle sport has increased with group travel being organised to the UK and the Isle of Man.

Superbike Magazine, South Africa, has in its July 2020 edition included a 14-page special on the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Road Races, including a brief history over its 65-years of racing.

The top selling magazine of its type in South Africa, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the print editions to be suspended since March, with the publishers quickly adapting to a fully electronic version in April, May, June, and July.

Superbike Magazine has some impressive contributors including experienced veteran reporters, Matt Oxley, and Adam ‘Chad’ Child, with a younger MotoGP reporter Simon Patterson bringing the average age down a little, with all three providing interesting features.

Clinton Pienaar has been the editor for 15 years, a road racer, he competed in the TT in 2010 racing in three events, all on a Honda Fireblade, finishing in the Superbike TT in 53rd place with an average speed of 107.443mph; taking 49th place in the Superstock race improving to 109.690mph and unfortunately picking up a DNF in the Senior TT.

Whilst on the Isle of Man, Clinton had a sight on the Southern 100 ‘Billown Course’ and in his own words, ‘was blown away with it’, so much so that he is hoping to organise a group tour next year to the UK and Northern Ireland, culminating in a visit to the Island for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company Southern 100 Road Races.
