My memories, an introduction
Hello
I am a brand new member of this forum. I was born and grew up in Johore Bahru, Malaysia where they had the Coronation Grand Prix. I watched the races there in 1960, 1961 and 1963.
I played truant and used to hang around the pits where they would heat castor oil over a kerosine stove before the bikes and cars rode on to the tracks. Some used wood burners. The pit was in open air along a busy street close to the race track. The Japanese and riders were extremely friendly but not so the Europeans. We conversed mostly in sign language
I have seen some legends race those days. Giichi Suzuki, Tanaka and Chris Profitt White on Hondas. Then there was Fumio Ito, Hakada and Hasegawa on the Yamahas. This was the time when the unknown Japanese bikes came to market and Honda became a household name. My memories are failing and sometimes remember the names of the riders.
Who could forget their ads those days. "You meet the nicest people on a Honda", picturing the 50cc Honda Cub. In 1964 I got my first bike which was a Honda C-90.
In 2005 I attended the Schottenring classic race in Germany where Agostini, Mike Hailwood raced their oldtimer bikes. Unfortunately I dont remember all the names today.
I own a 1974 BMW R90S today which I have owned since 1983. I have a video of Hans Otto Butenuths TT racer that some friends of mine bought about 20 years ago. I will post that in the another section.
