Tom Sheard - The Modest Manxman

Author: Bill Snelling
Posted on: Saturday, Aug 19 2006

Written and published by Ruth Sheard, one of Tom's grandaughters, this book chronicles the motorcycling life of Thomas Mylchreest Sheard (1889-1954).

Tom was the first Manxman to win the TT race on his home soil when he won the 1922 Junior TT on an AJS.

A year later, and in atrocious conditions, Tom used his local knowledge to win the 1923 Senior TT on a Douglas.

The book also chronicles the motorcycling life of his son Tim Sheard, who was also a competitor on the Island, this time in the Manx Grand Prix.

"For decades, the Isle of Man TT races have attacted competitors and enthusaists alike, who come time and time again to 'Manxland' to join in and be part of perhaps the most testing and thrilling event in the motorcycling calendar.

The modern day personalities are well known and universally admired. However, we should not forget the heroes of the past, without whom there would be no TT. This book is a tribute to one such unsuspecting here; the first Manxman to win on home ground. He modestly became part of our Island's history and this publication gives an insight into his determination and stamina, ensuring that those times are not forgotten.

Photographs of interesting documents from family memorabilia, together with reports by the press of the day, capture a bygone era quite different from now in terms of reliability of machines, but quite similar to now in terms of enthusiasm and cameraderie.

Take a moment to make yourself comfortable, relax and step back in time, to enjoy your own Isle of Man TT experience!"

A5 format, 147 pages, many contemporary black and white photographs and illustrations.
