Bulletin 5 - Wednesday 31st May - am.

Conditions were again described as perfect, but riders were warned of strong sun from Kirk Michael to Ramsey. The bigger classes led off this morning and Stephen Nugent on his F1 Honda and Carl Rennie on his Production Honda were first off promptly at 5.15 am. Colin Daniels and Sandra Barnett were next on the Proddie bikes with F1 riders Martin Child, Jim Hodson and Richard Britton next. Top men, Joey Dunlop, Adrian Archibald, Iain Duffus, Jim Moodie and James Courtney who left a black mark on the tarmac, also took advantage of the ideal conditions.

Carl Rennie on his Production Honda was first back with a lap at 114.92mph but Joey Dunlop, who had started way down the field was second and posted a lap at over 119mph on his F1 bike, and followed that up with another 119 plus. David Jefferies was again over the 120 – on his production machine he recorded 120.94. Other times F1 – Iain Duffus 119.21, John McGuinness 115.78 and Nigel Davies 115.54. In the Production Class Michael Rutter 116.86 and Richard Quayle 115.761 mph.

In the second session two riders dropped their machines on the start line – 74 Lightweight Martin Sharpe and 63 Singles Denis Gallagher. Adrian Archibald on his 600 lapped at 120.33, just short of his fastest from Monday evening. Sidecars wound up the session – first away were Geoff Bell and Craig Hallam, followed by Chris Founds and Peter Hounds, Roy Hanks and Dave Wells and Mick Harvey and Stephen Thomas.

Scrutineers report that 149 Solos and 20 Sidecars were checked this morning.

Incidents reported this morning – 69 Formula 1 Jun Maeda came off at Quarterbridge and was taken to Nobles Hospital for a check – as mentioned earlier Martin Sharpe and Denis Gallagher who dropped their machines on the start line are both OK.
