A little trivia to lighten the mood - Splashdown - 17-10-2007 Been reading the TT Course saga with a combination of astonishment and dismay, so thank goodness the Governor's Bridge matter may die down. Anyway, I was wandering through an old "Motor Cycling" the other night, and I read a short article, with some info that I never knew. So, ladies and gentlemen, who knows which famous TT rider, who has his name on a bend on what's left of our beloved course, joined a well known Football Club as its Chairman? I will be very impressed if someone offers the correct answer. I shall add more clues until someone gets it. In another posting when I get a free moment, I may add my three pennyworth to the TT running on the S100 course. suggestion - ian huntly - 17-10-2007 One could suggest Sir Alex Ferguson as "The Highlander" but he did not ride in the TT so I feel you may be referring to Ben Drinkwater ?? NO ??? I am still searching the grey area part of what's left of my brain so I will come up with a more spectacular and correct answer, Clarks no, Dorans no, Quarry no, Keep thinking is it - ian huntly - 17-10-2007 Well, is it Archie Birkin then ??? - Arthur Lawn - 17-10-2007 Well I guess Archie Birkins family were the only ones rich enough to be a chaiman of a major football club. Was it Notts county - larryd - 17-10-2007 This anorak is staying well away from this one, Nick. I have no bloody idea :!: Nay  - thewitch - 18-10-2007 Bill S is still in Canada, so I don't think he has spotted this. - cargo - 18-10-2007 If Larry doesn't know  what chance for us mere mortals  - Splashdown - 18-10-2007 OK. So it's not just me then. I thought to myself, everyone will know the answer to this teaser, except me. Anyway, the club is Coventry City, and the year of his appointment was 1958, long after he raced. Surely someone will run through the corners, and get there, maybe faster than they used to. - cargo - 18-10-2007 There's lots of little motorcycle connections with Coventry FC. TheY started in 1883 and grew from a team that began in Singer bicycle factory also in the 50s thy were know as "the bantams" But no sign of who the 1958 chairman was...................yet I got it i got i got wooohoooooooooooooo WALTER BRANDISH - Splashdown - 18-10-2007 Yeeeeehaaaa!! Cargo's FIRST over the line. That's a first anyway. Er Excuse me, the Bantams are the nickname for my team...BRADFORD CITY(FA Cup winners in 1911!!) Yes Walter Brandish is the correct answer, as reported by "Motor Cycling" February 1958. So what would Walter make of the remains of his landmark? Do you want some more weird and wonderful trivia from our favourite Island? - thewitch - 18-10-2007 That was excellent... carry on, anoraks! - larryd - 18-10-2007 Thank the Lord for that. You've no idea how lonely it can be as the only smartarse on the team :!: - thewitch - 18-10-2007 Nah... Nick and Cargo are twin souls... anoraks, smart arses... you're the team curmudgeon... keep glowering.. - Arthur Lawn - 18-10-2007 Well done Cargo you are obviously an expert with inside knowledge of Coventry City F C. Could you tell me which Coventry first team player still playing for them in the year 2000 survived the Manchester United Munich air crash in 1958? bruvvers - ian huntly - 18-10-2007 Which two racing brothers belonged to a family who owned and ran a huge fish and chip emporium ??? - Arthur Lawn - 18-10-2007 S and G Ramsden only fish and chip chain I know Ian. - cargo - 18-10-2007 Arthur Lawn Wrote:Well done Cargo you are obviously an expert with inside knowledge of Coventry City F C. Well now thats an interesting question and I have discovered that a one Steve Ogrizovic who was conventry city goalkeper up untill 2000 was alledged to have survived the Munich air crash. He was born in Sept 1957 so it is possible (with regard to his age) However it is an urban myth Here is the full list of the Munich survivors MUFC Players/Staff: Matt Busby (Manager) Johnny Berry Jackie Blanchflower Bobby Charlton Bill Foulkes Harry Gregg Ken Morgans Albert Scanlon Dennis Viollet Ray Wood Journalist Frank Taylor Photographers Peter Howard Ted Ellyard Passengers Mrs Vera Lukic Mrs Lukic's baby Mrs Miklos - wife of travel agent who arranged trip Mr N Tomasevic - passenger Interestingly the baby that survived the Munich air crash the child of Mrs Vera Lukic and there is yet another urban myth that this child is the John Lukic who played for Leeds and Arsenal This one is definatly a myth it was Mrs Vera Lukic's daughter who on the flight - Malcolm - 18-10-2007 To answer Arthurs conundrum, wasn't it Steve Ogrizovich who was a passenger as a young nipper at the time ?? - Arthur Lawn - 18-10-2007 Your dead right Cargo you certainly know your stuff,it was Steve Ogrizovic. I believe his correct birth date was Nov 1998 as his mum was an air stewardess at the time and was pregnant with Steve and both survived. Not motorcycle related but a lovely tale. - Arthur Lawn - 18-10-2007 Sorry meant 1958 |
