MGP TALKS THIS WEEK? |

MGP TALKS THIS WEEK?
The Council of Ministers could discuss this week whether the Manx Grand Prix should go ahead.
It is believed the issue is likely to be on the agenda for this Thursday’s (June 28) regular meeting as public pressure for a decision to be made continues to grow.
Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Alex Downie believes the situation is similar to that of the TT decision as there have still been around 30 to 35 cases of foot-and-mouth a week in the UK recently.
But Tourism and Leisure Minister David Cretney will be fighting for the August event to go ahead, with certain restrictions in place, as the tourism industry suffered a huge blow when the TT was cancelled back in April.
Douglas East MHK Brenda Cannell has already said she wants to see further compensation packages for the industry if the MGP is also scrapped.

I read that the decision on the running of the MGP 2001 will be made on 20 July 2001. Just three and a half week before quite a few teams are due to set sail (IOMSPC). I fail to see the basis of such a short period of notice will serve. Following the fiasco of the almost TT and the do not come for the races but come anyway, put that view together with the ongoing 'Come to the IOM' advertising push where the IOM welcomes you. I certainly feels as though the sportsmen and women are required for the financial stability of the Island, not for the sport but for their finances.
Does the action of the MHKs not seem to be 'let the impending TT/MGP competitors dangle for as long as possible thus leaving no time to alter plans (tourist board rubbing fagin like hands) and provide a late carrot to leave the funds with the IOMSPC (rubbing lots of fagin like hands and popping ballons) to pay for next year. I for one feel used, bemused and betrayed.

JOEYS ANNIVERSARY - JULY 2nd |

It is almost a year since the tragic news of Joeys death was transmitted to a stunned world. We all know where we were when we heard the news, and we each have a story to tell. This is mine.
I had just returned from the Skerries road races, the first to be held in the rain in living memory, when I heard the news on the TV. I was in my sitting room on my own at the time, recovering from a hectic time in the yacht bar the night before. I was devastated that such a thing could have happened. It was like someone had switched a light off in my heart. I looked down and saw the 2000 Skerries programme I had bought two days before. I flicked it open and looked at Joeys name on the entry lists. His decision to ride in Estonia had been a last-minute one, and it made it more difficult to get my head around what had happened.
I hated the Estonians at that moment. I hated their crappy circuit, and everything else about them. It wasn't their fault of course, but it felt better to be able to blame someone at the time. I went through the next few days in a daze, and on the day that Joey was flown into Dublin airport, I was there with my friends to touch the coffin and say, "thanks for everything Joey". But nothing I did made it any better.
In two weeks it will be the first anniversary of Joeys death, and I for one will grieve as I did on that awful day in 2000. But I will try to celebrate his life as well.
God bless you Joey, there will never be another like you.

Manx GP Verses FMD?! |

I am racing at the Manx in August, like many I am praying that it goes ahead. As we all know there can't be any further outbreaks of FMD after the 21st July. The very latest FMD news is available from MAFF on this site:

Fingers crossed!
See you in August

IOMMGP.COM - Have You Seen It Yet ? |

Just having a run through of postings on the "other site" and have noticed the following statement
"It is intended that 'iommgp.com' will become the MGP equivalent of this site. Development will begin in the next week or so and will be operational in good time for the build-up.
Naturally, we will ensure that iomtt.com is kept fully up-to-date as well.
Posted: 25/04/2001 12:08:31"
Some 2 months on and yet nothing has been done to promote the Manx on this so called new "official site".
Have any of you out there been able to find this so called "official site" because I cannot.
At least on here we are seeing some kind of action from the voluntary brigade, not like the money grabbing shower who operate the supposed "official site".
Yet again it looks like "buddies" operating together for personal financial gain at the expense of the punter.
Who is responsible for awarding offial status to the organisation that everyone knows the name of - Jook something or other ?,
How was this decided and what are they actually going to do that is of benefit to the MGP itself ?
Is it right for an organisation who are renowned for their money grabbing attitude to be given the title of "official site" or should it be given to those that really do have an honest interest in the sport ?
For me, the guys that run this site are number one, and the people who supposedly run and organise all of the racing on The Island, should be looking at giving the "official" status for the MGP to these guys.
I myself am sick of the attitude and behaviour of those in control, and propose that everyone out there should e-mail the people concerned and let them know just what they all think about how the MGP is promoted. - Give it to the people on here, they deserve it and for sure they will do a dammed site better job of covering it than the supposed "official site".
One truly pi**ed off fan !

Former 2001 Senior MGP Competitor |

As a result of the uncertainty regarding the 2001 Manx Grand Prix,my sponsor of my Senior machine has had enough of the indecision and withdrew his entries at 12.00 today.
I dont blame him-in fact I fully agree with him!Who wants to spend thousands of pounds and put in scores of hours of work only to be told at the last minute,"sorry lads, its all off"?Ive already played this waiting game with the TT.
Hopefully he will come back next year and we can go racing again in happier circumstances. But if the the Manx does go ahead, the Senior will be without the 500 Drixton Honda,7th last year,on the grid.
I know there are some who will be delighted at this news because they say it shouldnt be in the race at all.I also know of many people who loved the familiar sound of it being ridden in anger, audible for miles at a time-and with a Manx rider on board it.
Anyway, the bottom line is that there will be no Senior Classic ride for me this year.Unless anyone out there can help me with something competitive?I have many years experience in the Classic Manx Grand Prix lapping at just under 102mph last year on a bike almost six stone heavier than the winner.Ill consider anything as long as its competitive!! If anyone can help me ,please contact me by private e-mail
